Utilizando las imágenes que quedaron en la tradición sobre la destrucción de Jerusalén en el 587 a.C., el profeta describe los días previos a su «día final», el día de su victoria definitiva (1s). Después de los dolores y padecimientos, vendrá un cambio radical en todos los sentidos en el tiempo y en el espacio: el tiempo ya no será más cambiante, será un eterno día lleno de luz y felicidad; el espacio geográfico, de por sí árido y abrupto, se convertirá en llanura fértil, gracias a las fuentes que le irrigan tanto a oriente como a occidente (cfr. Eze_47:1-12). Son éstas las bases para una ciudad segura, tranquila y en paz, gracias a la permanente presencia del Señor y sus santos en ella (3-11). Pero antes de esta era idílica, el Señor castigará a todos los pueblos y naciones que han hecho el mal a Jerusalén, sin embargo, no los aniquilará completamente. De ellos quedará un «resto» que de algún modo entrará en comunión con el pueblo elegido, cumpliendo como todos la obligación de subir a Jerusalén a dar culto al Señor (12-19). Los versículos 20s «desmontan» la exclusividad sacra de ciertos elementos al poner en su mismo nivel cosas tan profanas como las campanillas de los caballos y los calderos de Jerusalén. ¿Sátira contra el sacralismo exagerado de ciertos objetos?
Termina el libro con la constatación de un anhelo que sólo Jesús vendrá a colmar: expulsar del templo a mercaderes y cambistas porque hacían del lugar un lugar profano como cualquiera (21c).
