52. Apéndice histórico: la destrucción de Jerusalén.
Esta sección postuma del libro de Jeremías es similar a 2 Re 24:18-25:30. Ha sido insertada aquí por un redactor posterior para probar con los hechos el cumplimiento de las profecías sobre la destrucción de Jerusalén y de su templo y del destierro de los judíos. En el capítulo anterior hemos encontrado ya el colofón: Hasta aquí las palabras de Jeremías. No obstante, hay indicios de que este capítulo depende de una fuente independiente de
2Re_24:18-25. Al menos puede caber la posibilidad de que ambos autores hayan bebido de una fuente común; de ahí algunas omisiones y variantes, en el supuesto de que se copiaban libremente adaptando a las exigencias de cada uno.
Toma de Jerusalén y captura del rey Sedecías (1-11).
1 A la edad de veintiún años comenzó a reinar Sedecías, y reinó once años en Jerusalén. Su madre fue Jamital, hija de Jeremías, de Libna. 2 Hizo mal a los ojos de Yahvé, como lo había hecho Joaquim, 3 encendiendo la cólera de Yahvé contra Jerusalén y contra Judá, hasta hacer que los arrojase de su presencia. Sedecías se rebeló contra el rey de Babilonia. 4 Y sucedió que el año nono de su reinado, el décimo mes, el diez del mes, vino Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, con todo su ejército contra Jerusalén, la cercó, levantó fortificaciones contra ella en derredor, 5 y estuvo sitiada la ciudad hasta el año undécimo del rey Sedecías. 6 El mes cuarto, el nueve del mes, se apoderó el hambre de la ciudad, y no había en ella nada que comer. 7 Abrieron brecha en los muros, y todos los hombres de guerra huyeron, saliendo de la ciudad de noche, por el camino de la puerta entre ambos muros, que está junto a los jardines reales, mientras los caldeos rodeaban la ciudad. Tomaron el camino que conduce al Araba. 8 El ejército caldeo persiguió al rey, dándole alcance en los llanos de Jericó, y todas sus tropas le abandonaron y se dispersaron. 9 Apresaron al rey y le llevaron ante el rey de Babilonia, en Ribla, en la tierra de Jamat, donde le juzgó. 10 El rey de Babel hizo degollar a los hijos de Sedecías a la vista de éste, e igualmente a los grandes de Judá, en Ribla. 11A Sedecías le hizo sacar los ojos y le cargó de cadenas de bronce para conducirle a Babilonia, donde le tuvo encarcelado hasta el día de su muerte. En los v.1-3 se da el conocido esquema histórico del libro de los Reyes, haciendo el juicio teológico del reinado de Sedecías, que resultó digno sucesor de su hermano Joaquim, ya que favoreció el sincretismo religioso e
hizo el mal a los ojos de Yahvé. La frase es la estereotipada del libro de los Reyes para condenar a los soberanos que no acomodaron su conducta pública a las exigencias del yahvismo tradicional ! A causa de sus iniquidades se encendió
la cólera de Yahvé contra Jerusalén y Juda (v.2). Los profetas consideran los hechos a la
luz de la teología de la historia de Israel; así, para ellos
los castigos son la justa retribución de los abusos de la nación como colectividad. Los v.2-4 se encuentran en 39:1-10, y son idénticos a
2Re_25:1-7. Sólo se da como dato nuevo la alusión a la carestía de vida en Jerusalén. Según estos datos, el ataque de las tropas de Nabucodonosor a Jerusalén tuvo lugar entre diciembre del 589 a enero del 588 2. El sitio duró hasta el año 586. La caída de Jerusalén fue en este año, en el mes cuarto, es decir, junio-julio 3. La huida fue por el lado sur de la ciudad,
junto a los jardines reales (v.7).
Los babilonios atacaban por el norte, la parte más vulnerable, y los fugitivos buscaron el camino del desierto o
Araba, como lugar más propicio para pasar inadvertidos. En
los llanos de Jericó fue cogido el rey, abandonado de sus soldados, cumpliéndose así la profecía de Jeremías 4. El rey fue llevado a
Ribla, en la Alta Siria (v.6), donde Nabucodonosor tenía su cuartel general. El castigo infligido a los hijos del rey, asesinados a la vista del padre, está en consonancia con las bárbaras costumbres antiguas orientales.
Destracción total de Jerusalén (12-23).
12 El quinto mes, el día diez del mes, el año decimonono de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, vino Nabuzardán, jefe de la guardia real, ministro del rey de Babilonia, a Jerusalén, 13 y puso fuego al templo, y al palacio del rey, y a todas las casas de Jerusalén, quemando principalmente todas las casas grandes, 14 y el ejército de los caldeos que estaba con el jefe de la guardia arrasó toda la muralla que rodeaba a Jerusalén. 15 El resto del pueblo que había quedado en la ciudad, los prófugos que se habían pasado al rey de Babilonia y el resto de los artesanos los llevó Nabuzardán, jefe de la guardia,16 dejando sólo los pobres de la tierra, viñadores y labradores. 17 Rompieron también las columnas de bronce que había en el templo de Yahvé, las basas y el mar de bronce del templo, y se llevaron todo el bronce a Babilonia. 18 Se apoderaron los caldeos de las palas, los cuchillos, las copas, las cucharas y todos los utensilios del culto. 19 Igualmente tomó el jefe de la guardia los pilones, los braseros, las copas, las calderas, los candelabros, las cucharas y los platos; todo cuanto era de oro, por oro; lo de plata, por plata; 20 las dos columnas, el mar de bronce y los doce toros de bronce y las basas que había hecho el rey Salomón para el templo, de un peso incalculable. 21 Las columnas eran de dieciocho codos de altura; rodeábalas un cordón de doce codos y tenían cuatro dedos de grueso, pues eran huecas por dentro. 22 Tenía cada columna su capitel de bronce, de cinco codos de alto; todo en torno de los capiteles había un entretejido con granadas, todo de bronce. Lo mismo la otra columna. 23 Eran noventa y seis las granadas, pendientes, ciento entre todas, sobre el entretejido en derredor.
El quinto mes del año 19 de Nabucodonosor es julio-agosto del 586, es decir, un mes después de la toma de Jerusalén por las tropas babilonias. Aún hoy día los hebreos celebran como día de luto este fatídico 10 del mes quinto (julio-agosto) del 586 5, en que la Ciudad Santa fue total y sistemáticamente desmantelada. Después de haber tomado la ciudad, el lugarteniente de Nabucodonosor, Nabuzardán, se fue a Ribla con el rey Sedecías y los magnates judíos para presentarlos al rey caldeo y, al mismo tiempo, recibir órdenes concretas sobre la conducta a seguir con los vencidos y con la ciudad de Jerusalén. El rey babilónico decidió destruir totalmente la ciudad que tantas preocupaciones le había costado. En el año 598 la había perdonado, pero ahora lo mejor parecía desmantelarla y dejarla inerme para que no tuvieran sus habitantes la veleidad de sublevarse de nuevo contra él.
Lo que más dolió a los vencidos fue que puso
fuego al templo (v.15).
Esto significaba el fin de la nación para ellos. No comprendían que la casa de Yahvé fuera a parar un día a manos de sus enemigos. En tiempos de Senaquerib,
Dios había salvado la ciudad por amor a su santa morada. Esto había hecho crear la ilusión de que Jerusalén era inexpugnable6; pero Jeremías anunció reiteradamente que estas ilusiones eran vanas y que Yahvé entregaría su ciudad y su templo a los babilonios 7. Era el cumplimiento de sus lúgubres profecías. Con el templo fueron destruidos los palacios del rey y de los magnates. Las murallas fueron dejadas en estado inservible (v.14) 8, de modo que no pudieran organizar nuevas resistencias. Después se organizó la deportación sistemática de las fuerzas vivas de la nación (v. 15-16) 9, quedando sólo
los pobres de la tierra, viñadores y labradores. El autor constata con tristeza la situación en que fue dejada la ciudad. El templo había sido ya expoliado en 598, pero ahora fue totalmente desmantelado:
las columnas de bronce (v.17) eran las dos que estaban a la entrada del templo, de nueve metros de altura y seis de circunferencia.
Las basas eran diez soportes de bronce de los recipientes para llevar el agua. El llamado
mar de bronce, por sus grandes dimensiones, era el gran depósito de agua junto al, altar de los holocaustos para lavar las víctimas 10. Estaba asentado sobre
doce toros de bronce (v.20).
Deportación de la clase directora de Jada (24-34).
24 Y se llevó el jefe de la guardia a Saraya, sumo sacerdote, y a Sofonías, el segundo, y a los tres prefectos del vestíbulo. 25 De la ciudad llevó a un eunuco intendente de las gentes de guerra, a siete de los consejeros íntimos del rey, que estaban en la ciudad; el secretario del jefe del ejército, encargado de la recluta, y sesenta más del pueblo, que se hallaban en la ciudad. 26 Y los llevó Nabuzardán, jefe de la guardia, ante el rey de Babilonia, en Ribla. 27 Y el rey de Babilonia los hizo matar en Ribla, en tierra de Jamat, y Judá fue deportado de su tierra. 28 Estos son los que deportó Nabucodonosor: El año séptimo de su reinado, tres mil veintitrés judíos; 29 el año dieciocho, ochocientas treinta y dos almas; 30 el año veintitrés de Nabucodonosor deportó Nabuzardán, jefe de la guardia, setecientas cuarenta y cinco almas; entre todos, pues, cuatro mil seiscientas almas. 31 y sucedió que en el año treinta y siete de la deportación de Joaquim, rey de Judá, en el duodécimo mes, el día veinticinco de él, Evil-Merodac, rey de Babilonia, el año del comienzo de su reinado, hizo gracia a Joaquín, rey de Judá, y le sacó de la prisión. 32 Le habló benévolamente y puso su silla sobre las de los otros reyes que estaban con él en Babilonia. 33 Dejó sus vestidos de preso, y comió ya siempre a la mesa del rey por todos los días de su vida. 34 Todo cuanto necesitaba para su mantenimiento se lo dio día por día hasta el de su muerte.
Después del fin de la resistencia de los judíos, fueron entregándose a los babilonios algunos personajes influyentes que habían logrado substraerse al primer contacto con los vencedores. Sin duda que quedaron resistiendo algunos bastiones después de la caída de la capital. Entre ellos estaba
Saraya, sumo sacerdote en tiempos del rey Josías y antecesor de Esdras 12. A
Sofonías le conocemos ya por otros textos y sabemos que estaba en muy buenas relaciones con Jeremías 13. Los v.28-30 faltan en el griego y en
2Re_25:1. Parece que está basado en un documento de procedencia babilónica. Al menos el cómputo de los años de Nabucodonosor se hace al modo caldeo, que no tenía en cuenta el tiempo entre la subida al trono y el año nuevo siguiente. Las cifras de deportados son muy moderadas, por lo que llevan viso de veracidad. Recuerda tres deportaciones de Nabucodonosor (598, 587, 582). La última es recordada por Josefo. Es interesante lo relativo a la liberación del rey Joaquín o Jeconías, que había sido llevado cautivo en 598. Durante la vida de Nabucodonosor estuvo encadenado. Hoy día conocemos, por documentos cuneiformes extrabíblicos, el trato que se le daba en la corte de Nabucodonosor. En un texto babilónico publicado en 1939 por Weidner 14 se concreta la ración mensual de aceite asignada al rey prisionero Joaquín y a los suyos. En 562 murió Nabucodonosor y le sucedió su hijo Evel-Marduk, o
Evil-Merodac según la Biblia (v.31), el cual inauguró su reinado con una amplia amnistía de los prisioneros de su padre. Joaquín fue tratado con especial consideración (v.32). Gozó de cierta libertad vigilada, pero tuvo que continuar en Babilonia. Evil-Merodac fue asesinado por Neriglisar, que reinó desde el 560 al 555. Aunque nada se dice, podemos suponer que continuaría la política comprensiva de su antecesor con los prisioneros.
