David salva a Quería (23:1-6).

Vinieron a decirle a David que los filisteos estaban atacando a Queila y habían saqueado las eras; 2
y David consultó a Yahvé, preguntando: ¿Iré a batir a los filisteos? Y Yahvé respondió: Ve, batirás a los filisteos y librarás a Queila. 3
Pero la gente de David le dijo: Aquí, en Judá, tenemos que guardarnos; ¿qué será si vamos a Queila contra las tropas de los filisteos? 4
Consultó David otra vez a Yahvé, y Yahvé le respondió: álzate y baja a Queila, pues te he dado los filisteos en tus manos. 5
Fue, pues, David a Queila con su gente y atacó a los filisteos, los puso en fuga, apoderándose de su ganado y haciéndoles experimentar una gran derrota, librando así a los habitantes de Queila. 6
Abiatar, hijo de Ajimelec, que había recibido a David, bajó con él a Queila, llevando consigo el efod.
David, con sus seiscientos hombres, habita en la región accidentada del sur de Palestina, al borde del desierto y de la Sefela. Un día del mes de junio le llega la noticia de que los filisteos saqueaban las eras de Queila y de que atacaban la ciudad. Hallábase
Queila en el lugar del actual
Jirbet Qila, a once kilómetros al sur de
Beit Gibrin y al sur de Odulam. El v.6 está adulterado en el texto hebraico, pero expresa la idea de que Abiatar acompañó a David en esta expedición militar llevando consigo el
efod.
Saúl, en persecución de David (23:7-18).

Cuando Saúl supo que David había ido a Queila, se dijo: Dios me lo entrega, pues ha ido a encerrarse en una ciudad que tiene puertas y cerrojos. 8
Saúl reunió al pueblo para la guerra, para bajar a Queila y sitiar en ella a David y a los suyos; 9
pero David supo el mal designio que contra él tramaba Saúl y dijo al sacerdote Abiatar: Trae el efod; 10
y luego preguntó: Yahvé, Dios de Israel, tu siervo sabe que Saúl se dispone a venir a Queila para destruir la ciudad por causa mía. 11
¿Bajará contra ella Saúl, como a tu siervo le han dicho? Yahvé, Dios de Israel, dígnate descubrírselo a tu siervo. Y Yahvé respondió: Bajará. 12
Volvió a preguntar David: Los habitantes de Queila, ¿me entregarán a mí y a los míos en manos de Saúl? Y Yahvé respondió: Te entregarán. 13
Entonces se levantó David con su gente, unos seiscientos hombres, y, saliendo de Queila, iban y venían a la aventura. Informado de que David había salido de Queila, suspendió Saúl su marcha. 14
David andaba por el desierto, acogiéndose a los lugares fuertes, y se estableció en la montaña del desierto de Zif. 15
Saúl no dejaba de perseguirle constantemente, pero Dios no le puso en sus manos. Mientras andaba David por el desierto, temió por saber que Saúl se había puesto en campaña para quitarle la vida; y estando en el desierto de Zif, en Joresa, 16
fue en su busca Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, a Joresa, y le animó en Dios, diciéndole: 17
Nada temas, pues la mano de Saúl, mi padre, no te alcanzará. Tú reinarás sobre Israel y yo seré tu segundo. Saúl, mi padre, lo sabe muy bien. 1 8
Renovaron ambos su pacto ante Yahvé, y, quedándose David en Joresa, Jonatán se volvió a casa.
Alegróse Saúl al saber que David estaba al alcance de su mano. De una ciudad con puertas y cerrojos, se decía Saúl, no podrá escapar. Además es de suponer que los de Queila sintieran cierta simpatía por la causa de Saúl, como lo demuestra el hecho de estar Dispuestos a entregar a David. De Queila, en la Sefela, mencionada en una letra de Tell el-Amarna con el nombre de
Qiltu, se internó en el macizo montañoso, al sur de Hebrón. La expresión
lugares fuertes no quiere decir que se estableciera David en ciudades amuralladas, sino que habitó en un terreno quebrado, con profundos torrentes, acantilados, cavernas y lugares intransitables. Con el nombre de
desierto de Zif se designa la región inhóspita entre Hebrón y el mar Muerto. La localidad de Joresa se identifica con la actual
Jirbet Khoreisa, a tres kilómetros al sur de Zif. Esta última localidad dará su nombre al desierto (
midbar)
de que hemos hablado, hallándose en el lugar llamado hoy
Tell Zif, a siete kilómetros al sur de Hebrón. Desde la colina de Zif se divisa un extenso panorama sobre el desierto. El
midbar designa una región no cultivada, pero capaz de ofrecer pasto al ganado menor (
son).
El
midbar es surcado por torrentes en la estación invernal; tiene montes áridos, que admiten un cultivo rudimentario de cebada, trigo y otros cereales.
Los de Zif traicionan a David (23:19-28).

Los de Zif habían ido a Gueba a decir a Saúl: David está escondido entre nosotros en los lugares fuertes, en Joresa, en la colina de Jaquila, que está al mediodía del desierto. 20
Baja, pues, íoh rey! corno estás deseándolo, que ponerle en tus manos es cosa nuestra. 21
Saúl les dijo: Bendígaos Yahvé por haberos dolido de mi suerte. 22
Pero id, os ruego, y observad mejor todavía por dónde anda, inquirid y ved cuáles son sus andanzas y quién le ha visto, porque, según me han dicho, es muy astuto. 23
Examinad y reconoced todos los escondrijos donde se oculta y volved luego a mí con informes exactos, y entonces iré con vosotros, y si allí está, yo le descubriré entre todas las familias de Judá. 24
Fuéronse, pues, otra vez a Zif, precediendo a Saúl; pero David con los suyos se había retirado al desierto de Maón, al mediodía del desierto. 25
Saúl salió con su gente en busca de David, y, habiéndolo sabido éste, bajó de las rocas, quedándose en el desierto de Maón. 26
Informado de ello Saúl, fue en persecución de David al desierto de Maón. Marchaba él por un lado de la montaña, y David y sus gentes, por el opuesto lado. Mientras se apresuraba David para escapar de Saúl y éste y sus gentes perseguían a David y los suyos para apoderarse de ellos, 27
vino un mensajero a decir a Saúl: Apresúrate, pues los filisteos han invadido la tierra; 28
y Saúl hubo de desistir de perseguir a David, para salir al encuentro de los filisteos. Por eso se llama todavía hoy aquel lugar Roca de la Separación.
Los de Zif denunciaron a David. Saúl alabó su lealtad. Díceles que David
es muy astuto (v.22). Esta frase es equívoca; puede ser que desconfiara Saúl de las intenciones de los zifitas al denunciar a David, temiendo que le tendieran un lazo. Puede también ser que con ella amoneste Saúl y ponga en guardia a los de Zif a fin de que se retrajeran de David. Finalmente, otra interpretación posible es la siguiente: Mientras los zifitas le daban la noticia sobre su enemigo, Saúl pensaba en su interior y reflexionaba acerca de las medidas que debía tomar, diciéndose a sí mismo; David es muy astuto; ¿qué hacer para capturarle?
Mientras tanto, David acampó más al sur, en el desierto de Maón (
Jos_15:55), a catorce kilómetros al sur de Hebrón. Los enviados de Zif regresaron a sus pueblos, siguiéndoles poco después Saúl n su ejército. Un torrente profundo, un verdadero cañón difícil de atravesar, separaba a los dos ejércitos. Unos y otros maniobran se espiaban, se temían. Buscaba Saúl un vado propicio para atravesar el torrente y atacar a David. En esta coyuntura, muy crítica quizá para David y sus hombres, llegó a Saúl la noticia de que los filisteos habíanse desparramado por tierras de Israel.
